When the lid pops off it’s half-cooked

I started making the odd foray down to Byron Bay, too, another day and a half’s walk from Mullumbimby. While trips to Mullumbimby generally accounted for six days (two to get there, two in town and two to get back), visits to Byron Bay could last eight to ten days, sometimes longer if I got locked up for drunkenness or fighting.

On the long walks people would sometimes stop and offer me a lift out of the blue, especially on lonely roads. Sometimes I’d accept, particularly if I was exhausted, but other times I’d say, ‘Thanks but no thanks.’ It depended on my frame of mind; I knew I was dangerous in a certain mood.

Partly these trips were about going on benders at the Railway Hotel in Byron or the Chincogan pub in Mullumbimby, and partly to stock up on supplies. Because my memory wasn’t as good as my forgetory, a shopping list was essential. The first thing I’d bought on my maiden run into Mullumbimby was a pencil (which I called my magic stick) and some paper. A typical early shopping list would be:
